Pittsburgh Pirates Tidbits

Ever dreamed of working in professional sports? Now you can..

How many emails per month do you get like that? Loads – I’m sure.

Well, because the Pirates want to sell more tickets than their direct mail campaigns are currently producing, they hired OmegaInteractive Inc, er, umm, Summit Advanced Marketing to do their direct marketing for them.

You know – direct mail, telephone calls at 7:59 PM, etc. Hey wait – the ad says no telemarketing and no direct mail! I guess that leaves . . . email. I can’t wait.

Perhaps instead they will be dropping by your home one fine evening while you are relaxing at the pool (ice rink in the winter). AT&T was kind enough to send two reps by our home tonight attempting to sell us more of their services. Right in the middle of dinner to boot.

New-wave marketing trends – you have to love them.

But I suppose we should be pleased as fans because, you see, Summit is the official marketing company for the Cleveland Indians too! Hey, if you’re going to model your team after someone else’s, I guess you might as well go all the way!

So, if you have a desire to work in professional sports, now you can! That’s right, Summit is looking for entry level management trainees and they say it’s "a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Don’t let it pass you by."

Got that?

Quick fact —

Ian Snell and Tom Gorzelanny combined to throw 41 quality starts (6+ innings, 3 or less earned runs) in 2007. The Pirates won 27 (66%) of those games. Believe it or not, the Reds had the best one-two punch in the NLCD in Bronson Arroyo and Aaron Harang who had 42 quality starts.

Sean Burnett is pitching in the Venezuela winter league with Aguilas del Zulia. You can follow his stats here (PDF document).

Nick Leyva, third base coach for the Brewers, was told he wasn’t on the same wavelength as Ned Yost and let go. Well, too bad – Coxie took a job with the White Sox. With as many runners as Yost had stranded at third last year, I thought Cox would have been a perfect fit.

Jim Colborn is rumored to be a candidate for the Seattle Mariners pitching coach position. Bomb’s away!

Torre gone – un-be-lievable. I’m not sure what Hank Steinbrenner and company were thinking letting Torre go but I suppose the Yankees are heading down a new road.

Here’s a few scouting names you might be hearing about shortly — Dave Holliday is connected to Rob Walton, who is connected to Jay Darrell, who is connected to Dave Klipstein, who is connected to an associate scout with the Pirates named Rip Garcia. Now, Ray Hayward is connected to Garcia through Klipstein and Garcia is connected to him via Lane Decker, Bob Laurie, and Brian Capps.

These men form a choir group known as the ‘Religious Rockers’ and any one or more of them could be coming to the Pirates scouting team soon.

Or so says Father Hartley who had a divine dream.

"’We’re through the ‘gathering’ [information] process," the Pirate general manager said yesterday. "We’re into the ‘action’ process. . . I know people are thinking we’re taking a ridiculous amount of time on this…"’ – Neal Huntington, four weeks after being told he had the Pirates GM position, on his search for a manager as he continues in vain to look for a #1, October 20, 2007

Ridiculous amount of time? No way.. I mean, the interviewing stage should only take another week or two, and then there is the due diligence stage. Maybe sometime in December Huntington will announce a manager? Maybe..

Yawn..

Huntington also said the Pirates had Dusty Baker and Trey Hillman on their potential candidate list.

Sure he did. Probably Joe Torre and Tony LaRussa too.
